Understanding Cerebral DSA

Cerebral DSA (Digital Subtraction Angiography) is a specialized X-ray procedure used to obtain detailed images of the blood vessels supplying the brain and neck. A thin catheter is guided into an artery, usually through the wrist or groin, and contrast material is injected while X-ray images are captured.

Cerebral DSA helps us understand the brain’s vasculature and blood-flow dynamics. It is particularly helpful in evaluating recurrent stroke and structural neurovascular pathology, where detailed assessment of the cerebral blood vessels may be required. DSA can also provide important information about conditions such as brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), arterial narrowing, and other neurovascular disorders.

When Is Cerebral DSA Considered?
