Understanding AVM Embolization

An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins that disrupts normal blood flow. When an AVM occurs in the brain, it may increase the risk of bleeding and can sometimes cause seizures, headaches, or other neurological symptoms.

AVM embolization is a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure used to reduce or block abnormal blood flow within the AVM. During treatment, a thin catheter is guided through the blood vessels, and specialized embolic material may be delivered to selected abnormal vessels.
