Understanding Carotid Artery Stenting

The carotid arteries are major blood vessels located on both sides of the neck that supply blood to the brain. When these arteries become narrowed due to the buildup of fatty deposits, known as plaque, the condition is called carotid artery stenosis. Significant narrowing may increase the risk of stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA).

Carotid artery stenting is a minimally invasive procedure used in selected patients to improve blood flow through a narrowed carotid artery. During the procedure, a thin catheter is guided through the blood vessels to the narrowed area. A small balloon may be used to widen the artery, and a stent is placed to help keep it open.

Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, sudden vision changes, dizziness, or loss of balance may indicate a stroke or TIA.
