Understanding VP Shunt Surgery

VP (ventriculoperitoneal) shunt surgery is a neurosurgical procedure used to divert excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain into the abdomen, where it can be absorbed by the body. It is commonly used to treat hydrocephalus, a condition in which CSF builds up within or around the brain and can increase pressure on brain tissue.

A VP shunt consists of a catheter and valve that help control the flow of CSF. It may be considered for selected patients with hydrocephalus caused by conditions such as brain tumors, bleeding, injury, congenital abnormalities, or other disorders affecting CSF circulation.

When Should You Seek Urgent Medical Care?

Severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, increasing drowsiness, seizures, changes in vision, confusion, or reduced consciousness may require urgent medical assessment. In someone with an existing shunt, symptoms suggesting blockage or infection—such as worsening headache, vomiting, fever, or unusual sleepiness—should also be assessed promptly.
