VP Shunt Surgery in Bhopal
Understanding VP Shunt Surgery
VP (ventriculoperitoneal) shunt surgery is a neurosurgical procedure used to divert excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain into the abdomen, where it can be absorbed by the body. It is commonly used to treat hydrocephalus, a condition in which CSF builds up within or around the brain and can increase pressure on brain tissue.
A VP shunt consists of a catheter and valve that help control the flow of CSF. It may be considered for selected patients with hydrocephalus caused by conditions such as brain tumors, bleeding, injury, congenital abnormalities, or other disorders affecting CSF circulation.
Our Treatment Approach
At Snayu Neurocare, Dr. Nishant Kumar Shukla performs VP shunt surgery for patients who require surgical treatment of hydrocephalus.
Evaluation may include neurological examination and appropriate CT or MRI imaging. Treatment decisions depend on the cause of hydrocephalus, symptoms, age, overall health, and other clinical findings. In selected cases, alternative procedures such as endoscopic third ventriculostomy may also be considered.
The approach focuses on careful surgical planning, patient safety, appropriate monitoring, and follow-up to assess shunt function and recovery.
When Should You Seek Urgent Medical Care?
Severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, increasing drowsiness, seizures, changes in vision, confusion, or reduced consciousness may require urgent medical assessment. In someone with an existing shunt, symptoms suggesting blockage or infection—such as worsening headache, vomiting, fever, or unusual sleepiness—should also be assessed promptly.
Medical Emergency: If you experience any of the warning signs described above, seek immediate emergency hospital care. Please do not wait for a clinic appointment or a response to your online enquiry.
